On the eve of Pongal festival, Bull fight, ‘JALLIKATTU’ comes the highlight of the celebration. After the lift of Ban on this sport by the supreme court with number of cases filed against the Ban, this year ‘JALLIKATTU’ famous Alanganallur, in the Madurai district today Jan 16 hosted this sport with great expectation.
The chief minister of Tamil Nadu E. Palanisamy, the deputy chief minister O. Panneerselvam inaugurated the event, where few ministers were also present. Nearly 1000 Bulls participated in this event , where 1241 Bull tamers who registered enterred the arena. Both the Bull tamers and the Bulls were examined by the Medical practitioners and safety measures were arranged as per the instructions of the supreme court. 10 teams of doctors to examine the tamers and 12 teams of veterinary doctors were present. 2000 policemen were involved in providing security for the spectators. A large number of spectators from various parts of the state including few foreigners witnessed the world famous JALLIKATTU. Out of 36 tamers injured, 6 were sent Madurai GH for intensive care
