Senior Pontiff of ancient Sankara mutt of Kanchi, Sankaracharya Jeyandra Saraswathi passed away following cardiac arrest. He was admitted in the hospital as he complained of breathing problem, which could not be revived.
Born on July 18, 1935, Jeyandra Saraswathi was annointed as the pontiff of the mutt and in 1994, he took charge as the head of the Mutt, rose to be a spiritual and financial power house, running several hospitals and educational institutions including a medical college. The Sankaracharya was arrested in 2004 for his alleged role in the murder of a manager of the temple trust. He was acquitted by a trial court citing lack of evidence in 2013.
