A public interest litigation petition was filed before the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, seeking the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Fee Determination Committee to publish the school fee fixed for the academic years from 2018 to 2021.
A division bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P.Rajamanickam directed the Committee to fix the fee and publish them before April 30. Special Government Pleader A.K.Bhaskara Pandian told the court that there were 10,000 private schools in the State and fees were determined for 5,500 of the schools. The court directed that the fee be determined for the remaining 4,500 schools.
The petitioner, K.Hakkim of Madurai, in his petition said the earlier chairperson of the committee, Justice Singaravelu had fixed the fees up to the academic year 2017-2018. However, the committee was yet to publish the fee structure. He said private schools were charging excess fees and there was no transparency.
