Since May 2017, the Trichy city corporation has been collecting domestic as well as commercial waste at source in a segregated manner. The degradable waste was made into compost while non-biodegradable waste was recycled through scrap dealers. So far, the city corporation has distributed 34,100 cost-free dustbins to household and commercial establishments across all the 65 wards to promote segregation of waste at source.
Though door to door collections carried out by the corporation, it has not been much successful as the corporation appointed collection persons and the vehicle come to the residential areas in different timing, which ends in visiting door locked houses as most of them are out to their jobs. Only few who stay in the houses do make use of this system and even the collection of non-biodegradable waste collection on every Wednesday has also not been successful as expected.
The corporation officials, to encourage segregation of waste at source, has removed most of the dustbins in the residential areas, resulting in dumping of waste on the road sides, street corners and on vacant sites. The reason cited by the residents is that, the corporation collection vehicle do not come early or on regular timing, since most of the residents as couples go for work before 8 am, and hence the waste of the day is being thrown on the road sides due to lack of dustbins, ultimately posing a threat to ‘Clean city‘.
