Community renovation and organisation advancement trust (COROAT) organized an event with the aim of highlighting the need for forming a panel like the village child protection committee in urban areas in Trichy which saw an active participation from children.
The children parliament  expressed concern about the growing child labour issue, stating that it was one of the problems disturbing children in Varaganeri, Sathiyamoorthy Nagar, warehouse area in Palakkarai and few other places in the city.

A boy who took part in the parliament claimed that they were forced in to hard labours and to work among and equal to adults and ultimately introduced to beedi, cigarette, sedative solutions, ganja and various other narcotic products. Another boy spoke on the need for creating a mechanism to monitor, identify the affected and vulnerable children and rehabilitate them through counselling, education.

They even cited the frequent incidences of child sexual abuses by the family members and friends in such areas and  proposed to form a committee by the NGO comprising of 11 members, including a headmaster, area councillor, parents and children to  discuss and find solution to the issues affecting the children.

“Developing addictive behaviours from childhood is the root-cause of sexual exploitation and juvenile delinquency. If there is a committee like VCPC, the implementation can be possible in the urban areas with the help of NGOs for which a government order should be passed,” said the founder trustee of (COROAT) M Padmavathy.
