A controversy over a tahsildar in Trichy district allegedly aiding illegal sand mining in Kollidam river prompted the district administration to order an inquiry here on Friday. The police also arrested the driver and the owner of the truck loaded with stolen river sand.
It was around 1 am the residents of Thiruvasi village found a truck loaded with sand taken from Kollidam river in the locality. They immediately surrounded the vehicle and questioned them. The driver was identified as Periyasamy, 22 from Ayyampalayam. The owner of the truck, Dhanapal, 26, of the same village also accompanied him.
Sources said that the two caught by the people, allegedly pointed finger at woman tahsildar alleging that they took the sand at her behest in order to use the sand for construction of a building for her personal use in the district.
The tahsildar in question who came to the spot, reportedly tried to seize the vehicle which was in the custody of the people. But the people refused to let off the truck alleging that they will be freed by the tahsildar.
Despite the attempts by the officials to take custody of the vehicle, the residents stay put preventing them from confiscating the vehicle. Eventually, the Mannachanallur police intervened and seized the truck besides detaining the two persons. Upon inquiry, the police arrested the two persons. On the other hand, a complaint was filed by an advocate linking the Tahsildar into the controversy.
The inspector of police, Mannachanallur police station, Immanuel Rayappan said that the tahsildar was unnecessarily dragged into the controversy. “The tahsildar was on her way to seize the truck only as she got some tip-off,” said the inspector.
Yet, the district collector K Rajamani who was informed about the issue last night itself inquired with the tahsildar on Thursday.
Since there was an allegation raised against the officer, he ordered a thorough inquiry into the matter by a revenue divisional officer (RDO) in the village.
