EVR Periyar College, Trichy was one of the only colleges in the state to have its own bus for students. Donated by former transport minister, K N Nehru, a few years ago, the bus was used to drop students to bus stands, a faculty member of college said.
However, it is not functional anymore as its operations were stopped within weeks after the service began. The bus has now been reduced to scrap and left abandoned in a corner of the college, which stands testimony to the apathy of successive administrators of the college, the faculty added.
Nehru came forward to donate the bus after he was informed about the inconvenience faced by students in reaching the college from the city bus stand in the absence of proper public transport.
The bus was operated for few weeks as Nehru also came forward and took responsibility of the cost of operation. A senior faculty from the college said that it could not be operated after AIADMK came to power as the college administrators were apprehensive about running it.
The bus was damaged by students during a protest when their repeated demand to run the bus remained unheard, said faculty members.
“Successive principals too refrained from taking steps to run the bus, which could have been done using PTA funds, but they remain evasive to ensure that they remain in the good books of the ruling party,” said another faculty member.
When asked, I Julie, principal of Periyar EVR College, said she came to know about the bus and said that she would take steps to revive the bus service after consultation with the college council. Julie, who took charge as principal four months ago, said that the bus was abandoned over difficulty in maintaining the bus and meeting out the fuel expenses.
