The participants were being involved in workshops by Math professors and researchers. The tour also included visits to a museum that showcased his life and work, and places of cultural interest.

At Kumbakonam, the team organised a joint workshop with high school students of The Town High School, the alma mater of Srinivasa Ramnujan.

The five-day tour encompasses visits to some of India’s finest Math institutes like the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), and Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) to expose students to the possibilities of pursuing Mathematics as an undergraduate course and further career prospects. “This Yatra is a humble attempt to reduce Mathematics brain-drain,” Mr. Ranjith said, adding that exam-oriented study only kills the students’ creativity and interest in doing good Mathematics.

Though many have heard of Srinivasa Ramanujan as a genius, not all know the pains he had to endure to attain his level. The participants were told about the important role played by Prof. Hardy, Janakiammal (Ramanujan’s wife) and others in the life of the mathematical genius, he said.

The team believes that the movie being screened to the participants on Srinivasa Ramanujan’s personal story will inspire even people not oriented towards Mathematics. The yatra aims to highlighting the dedication, hard work and self-belief of the mathematical genius.
