TIRUVARUR: Bowing to Tiruvarur district administration has revoked the suspension of a woman tahsildar of Mannargudi within hours of issuing the same for dereliction of duty around midnight on Thursday.
Tiruvarur collector L Nirmal Raj had placed the tahsildar of Mannargudi taluk, Sridevi Sivanandam, on suspension following complaints of alleged dereliction of duty in rescue operations in the areas affected by cyclone Gaja under her jurisdiction on Thursday. However, the news about the suspension evoked protests from revenue department officials in the district. They took out a demonstration under the banner of Tamil Nadu Revenue Department Officials Association outside the district collector office in Tiruvarur in the night demanding that the suspension be withdrawn.
The protesters maintained that the action taken against the tahsildar was unjustified as it was common for any human being to get exhausted after extensive work. In the case of Sridevi, the association claimed, her alleged slackness was due to her health condition which should not be taken seriously. Despite the talks held by the administration with the protesters, they went ahead with the demonstration. Fearing that a strike by revenue officials would hamper relief works in areas affected by the cyclone in the district, the administration revoked the suspension order even before it was issued to Sridevi in the early hours of Friday.
A top official in Tiruvarur district told on Friday that arrangements for the recent visit of governor Banwarlilal Purohit were not made satisfactorily and the district administration had taken a serious note of the alleged lapse and suspended her. Eventually, the collector revoked the order putting an end to the protests. When contacted in the evening, tahsildar Sridevi told that she was on duty surveying the damage in her taluk.
