CASH, VALUABLES STOLEN AS ROBBERS TARGET UNSUSPECTING COMMUTER

TRICHY: City witnessed a chain-snatching incident and two house robberies in Thiruvanaikval, Srinivasa Nagar and Karumandapam areas on Tuesday. Cash and valuables total worth Rs 2.5 lakh were stolen in the three incidents.

M Srimathi, 54 from South Street in Thiruvanaikovil in the city was walking with her daughter on the road near Mottai Gopuram on Monday night when a bike-borne man snatched her two and half sovereigns of gold chain.

On receiving the complaint, Srirangam crime police inspector, R Sindhunathi registered a case and investigated the matter. The case of chain snatching was reported barely a week after the Srirangam police arrested a 31-year-old financier-turned-chain snatcher in connection with 14 cases in Srirangam and other parts of the city.

In another incident, house of P Chidambaram, 66, from Srinivasa Nagar on Vayalur road, was robbed on Monday night. Chidambaram lodged a complaint with the Woraiyur police on Tuesday.

According to his complaint, he went to a nearby temple after locking his house in the evening. When he returned home in next one and a half hour, he found the back side grill gate and lock broken. He found that total valuables worth Rs 1.98 lakh including 17 sovereigns of gold jewelleries worth Rs 1.7 lakh, silver utensils and cash were stolen from the house. The Woraiyur police filed an FIR on Tuesday and took up the investigation.

Another house burglary came to light on Tuesday afternoon at the residence of K Devi Padmanaban, 47 from Vinayaga Nagar, 1st Street in Karumandapam in Trichy. The owner of the house had informed Padmanaban, who was in Kerala from November 24, about the incident. It was alleged that the front door of the house was broken by the burglars and nine sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 40,000 cash were stolen.
