Trichy: A 50-year-old man was murdered by three men near Manalmedu in Nagapattinam district on Thursday night after they came to know that he had been informing police about their illegal sand mining activities on the Kollidam riverbanks.
The deceased has been identified as Murugan Marudhavanan of Sathangudi. The suspects — R Kanagaraj of Sathangudi, S Jayakumar of Sithamalli and Ranjith of Kurichi – were involved in illegal sand mining, police said. Recently, they came to know that Marudhavanan had been informing police about their illegal mining activities. They decided to murder him.
According to police, the murder took place during the intervening nights of Thursday and Friday. Police said that late on Thursday night, Marudhavanan, a former local DMK functionary, had informed the Manalmedu police about a sand mining activity at Kollidam river banks in his area. As a result, a team of police reached the spot. Though they secured the vehicle in which the sand was being smuggled, the driver fled from the spot.
The vehicle belonged to Kanagaraj, who later found out that Marudhavanan had tipped off the police. When Marudhavanan was going home on his two-wheeler to his home, he was allegedly intercepted by Kanagaraj and two others – Jayakumar and Ranjith. They attacked him with iron rods resulting in his death.
After coming to know about the incident, police reached the spot and conducted investigation. Marudhavanan’s body was sent to the Mayiladuthurai government hospital for postmortem.
Mayiladuthurai deputy superintendent of police S Venkatesan said that illegal sand mining was common in the area. He said that Marudhavanan had been serving as a police informant for some time. “During our investigation, we came to know that Marudhavanan himself used to be involved in illegal sand mining before, but he stopped the practice some time back and became a police informant,” the DSP said. He said that only 10 days back, Kanagaraj was caught in an illegal sand mining incident.
