During the ritual, being conducted after 18 years, pontiffs and senior priests chanted Vedic hymns while holy water was poured over the Kalasams in gopurams (towers) across the temple.

Situated between Kollidam and Cauvery rivers in the Srirangam island, Arulmigu Jambukeswarar temple in Thiruvanaikoil is one of the five element shrines (Panchabootha sthalams). Worshipped as an embodiment of the element water, a plan to consecrate the temple was mooted a couple of years ago. Apparently, as the holy consecration was scheduled to be held on December 12, yagasalai pooja commenced near Sundarapandian gopuram from December 9.
