TRICHY: Lakhs of devotees witnessed the Mahakumbabishekam (consecration) of Arulmigu Jambukeswarar Akhilandeswari temple in Thiruvanaikoil in Trichy on Wednesday morning. During the ritual, being conducted after 18 years, pontiffs and senior priests chanted Vedic hymns while holy water was poured over the Kalasams in gopurams (towers) across the temple.
Situated between Kollidam and Cauvery rivers in the Srirangam island, Arulmigu Jambukeswarar temple in Thiruvanaikoil is one of the five element shrines (Panchabootha sthalams). Worshipped as an embodiment of the element water, a plan to consecrate the temple was mooted a couple of years ago. Apparently, as the holy consecration was scheduled to be held on December 12, yagasalai pooja commenced near Sundarapandian gopuram from December 9.
In the early hours of Wednesday, after performing Naadisanthanam at the Jambukeswarar shrine, amidst the chants of Sivachariyars, the senior pontiff of Kanchi Mutt Vijayendra Saraswathi and other senior priests performed the holy consecration rituals and poured holy water in the gopurams. Subsequently, the holy water added with natural ingredients were sprinkled over the thousands of devotees gathered. Foreseeing huge crowd, city police established multiple layers of security at all the entry points to control the crowd entering the rooftop of Thiruvanaikoil temple corridors where people were seated to witness the auspicious event held between 6.30 am and 7 am.
