Trichy: A large number of farmers participated in the widespread fasting protests on Tuesday organized by CPI across the delta and Pudukottai districts demanding adequate compensation for the losses they incurred due to Cyclone Gaja.
In Tiruvarur district alone, the protest was held in more than 150 spots including Thiruthuraipoondi and Katchanam. State secretary of CPI, R Mutharasan participated in the protest that was organized in Tiruvarur.
In Thanjavur district, protest was organized at 100 spots and several farmers thronged especially in Orathanad and Kumbakonam. In Nagapattinam and Pudukottai, the protest was held in 50 and 35 spots respectively. The fasting began at 9am and was held till 5pm.
Speaking at the protest, the farmers demanded Cyclone Gaja to be announced as a national disaster. They sought the central government to immediately sanction Rs 15,000 crore relief fund as requested by the state government. The farmers said that many lost their entire livelihood and hence all the crop loan should be waived.
