TRICHY: An assistant registrar at the Central University of Tamil Nadu CUTN) was placed under suspension on Friday in connection with stealing trunks of teak trees that were uprooted during the cyclone Gaja and stashing them on the university campus.

The action was initiated against assistant registrar A Velu after a three-member internal committee constituted by the university submitted its preliminary report pointing to his involvement.

Forest officials confiscated the stolen logs which were stashed on the university campus on Wednesday. As the logs were brought inside the university without the knowledge of the administration, a committee was formed to probe the whole row.

Velu was in-charge of managing security, outsourcing man power, despatch and transport at the university. He was relieved of his responsibilities on Wednesday itself by the university to ensure fair investigation.

Meanwhile, the forest department arrested five people on Thursday and booked them under the Tamil Nadu forest Act, 1882. All the five have been charged for illegal handling of a scheduled timber. Three of them were working as temporary workers on the university premises.

The university has also barred access of Dheenadayalan and Gopi at the university, who were working as plumbers on contract basis. Dheenadayalan is one among the five arrested by the forest department. Access has also been barred for security guards Murugesan and Sivaramakrishnan who were arrested in connection with the case.
