Trichy: Thousands of devotees thronged the renowned Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni in Nagapattinam district for Christmas on Tuesday and attended special masses and prayers.
The Velankanni town, which is one of the most famous Christian pilgrim centres in the country, sported a festive look right from Monday night. All the churches and several houses adorned colourful decorations to celebrate Christmas and New Year.
A special prayer was organised on Monday midnight at the Morning Star Church of the Basilica. Prayers were performed in several languages including in Tamil, English, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and Konkani. Later on Tuesday, right from 6am to 6pm, several holy masses and special prayers were organised. Pilgrims from across the country took part in the prayers.
Elaborate security arrangements had been made with heavy posse of police deployed across the town in order to ensure smooth conduct of the festival.
Christmas was celebrated with religious fervour across Trichy as well. Unmindful of the chill climate, devotees attended the special prayer on Monday midnight and on Tuesday, they attended the early morning masses organised in the churches. A large number of people thronged the Basilica of the Holy Redeemer at Palakkarai and St Mary’s Cathedral Church at Melapudur. Apart from prayers being performed in churches, several private organisations and welfare associations organised cultural events and other celebrations on Christmas day.
In Thanjavur district, Basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes at Poondi had grand decorations as a part of the festivities and several people from across the district attended the special prayer conducted at 11.45 pm on Monday night.
Similarly, Christmas was celebrated in a grand manner in other central districts of Perambalur, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, Karur and Tiruvarur too.
