The oneday strike by bank employees as part of nationwide protests hit transactions worth Rs 500 crore in Trichy on Wednesday, according to the United Forum of Bank Unions BFU .
Over 3,000 employees from 400 branches of nationalized and private banks from across Trichy went on strike as per the series of protests against the proposed merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda by the central government. The unions of bank employees have been raising their voice against the merger ever since it was announced in September.
“The merger plan is not only a policy against the public sector banks but also all class of people including traders. It will have a negative impact on employment opportunity,” said G Ramaraj, district convener of UFBU.
