Trichy: Students of a middle school near Sembanarkoil in Nagapattinam district have donated Rs 9,368 towards Cyclone Gaja relief by saving their pocket money for the last two weeks. School teachers said that the students handed over the collection to the district collector who appreciated their gesture.
About 200 students are studying in the aided school at Parasalur near Sembanarkoil. They had come to know about the extent of damage caused to properties of people in the district by the severe cyclone that made landfall on November 16. Relief materials had started pouring into the affected people from all quarters. Moved by the tragedy, the students also decided to contribute their mite to bring succour to the affected.
When the students conveyed their plan to headmaster Velayutham, he encouraged them and asked them to save their pocket money every day. Consequently, the students started saving their pocket money ranging from Rs 1 to Rs 10 about 15 days ago. Every day, representatives of students collected the money from every classroom. Meanwhile, after coming to know about the students’ gesture towards the cyclone-affected people, some parents too pitched in, the school authorities said.
When they decided to hand over their savings to the district collector, they counted the money that accumulated and were elated that it added up to Rs 9,368. School headmaster Velayutham rounded off the contribution by adding Rs 632. The students met district collector S Sureshkumar along with the headmaster, school management authorities Kalyanam and Masilamani and handed over Rs 10,000. The district collector appreciated the efforts of the students as well as the school authorities.
