TRICHY: Greater Spotted Eagle and Eurasian Western Harrier are the rare bird species to be spotted this year in water bodies on the outskirts of the city which are an ideal stopover for migratory birds travelling down south and towards Kodiakkarai in Nagapattinam district.

However, the migratory birds coming to Trichy region have come down this year, according to bird watchers in the city. Birds travelling all the way from North Pole to escape the extreme winter come to Vedanthangal after which they fly down south cross Trichy.

While the turnout of birds in Vedanthangal has been less, there has been a fall in number of these birds coming to water bodies in Trichy they say.

Kiliyur, Koothaippar and Devarayaneri tanks on the outskirts of Trichy have been some of the ideal spots for these winged visitors to rest for the past few weeks after travelling several thousand miles. N Thangamani, 47, an avid bird watcher from the city, has been studying the movement of birds and its implications around the state, especially Trichy since 2011.
