Trichy: Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) has opened 60 direct procurement centres (DPCs) across Thanjavur district to purchase samba paddy. Officials said 90,000 tonnes of paddy had been procured so far from 109 centres functioning in the district and established for the 2018-19 kharif season.

Despite the devastation caused by Cyclone Gaja, paddy farmers had managed to raise their standing samba cultivation in Thanjavur district. In fact, the worst affected Orathanadu area was the first in the district to start harvest of samba paddy 10 days ago.

According to authorities, out of 109 direct procurement centres functioning since October 1 last year, 79 had been established to cater to the needs of farmers. Other paddy-dominant areas like Kumbakonam and Papanasam will have harvest in the third week of January. At present, the DPCs are procuring 1,000 tonnes of paddy from each centre, they added. However, based on the requirement, the officials have promised to open the required number of DPCs once the harvest intensifies.

In the case of Nagapattinam, and Trichy, the agriculture officials have recommended to the officials of TNCSC that it was enough to open the DPCs only during the third week of January. Samba paddy harvest is yet to commence in Trichy district where Lalgudi farmers may go for harvest only during the last week of January.
