Trichy: As many as 1.50 lakh people thronged the three-day long home composting exhibition hosted at Kalaiarangam wedding hall near central bus stand in Trichy. Organised by the Trichy Corporation, officials said that a majority of the visitors were school students, who were encouraged to learn solid waste management practices. As many as 2,000 people purchased home composting equipment and kit from the stalls established as a part of the home composting expo.To promote waste recycling activities at home, so that city’s waste generation capacity would come down, corporation on Friday launched home compost exhibition by establishing 50 stalls. A majority of the stalls had displayed the home composting kits including green bins that break down biodegradable waste into manure in a closed compartment and pot composting kits for producing manure from home waste.
On the third of the exhibition, civic body officials said that more than 1.50 lakh people visited the stalls on Sunday to learn the solid waste management practices for keeping the city clean and free from litters. “Total 28 bulk waste generators including hotels and marriage halls have placed orders for machinery that can convert waste into manure on the spot,” an official source with the corporation said.
Sources claimed that the exhibition was first of its kind hosted by a civic body in the country to focus exclusively on recycling waste at home. Terming that reception from families particularly for terrace gardening and to purchase cloth and jute bags were at its high, officials attributed the response to the plastic ban that came into effect this year. Corporation said that they have plans to host similar solid waste management exhibition in the next few months.
