TRICHY: A 30-year-old policeman constable, who attempted to commit suicide by consuming rat poison on December 28, died on Tuesday after failing to respond to treatment. The health condition of his fiancé, a policewoman, who also had consumed the poison, was critical.
R Jayadevan, 30, a police constable attached to the Police Recruits School (PRS) in Navalpattu in Trichy, was declared dead at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital in Trichy on Tuesday morning. His marriage with his colleague Shenbagam was recently fixed by both the families to take place on February 17.
The police are investigating the reason behind Jayadevan’s attempt to commit suicide. His father has lodged a complaint with the police stating that his son had stomach pain for several years. Since he was unable to bear it, he committed suicide. Unable to bear the tragedy, Shenbagam also consumed poison.
The police handed over the body to the family after post-mortem.
Shenbagam, a police constable under Thiruverumbur police station, was taking care of Jayadevan at the hospital. On January 4, she went to Rameswaram and consumed rat poison near the Rameswaram temple. She was admitted at the hospital there and shifted to a private hospital in Trichy later.
The police said that Jayadevan and Shenbagam fell in love with each other when they were posted in Rameswaram a few years ago. Shenbagam, a native of Salem, got transfer to Trichy and both were working together.
