Trichy: A government school student from Karur district has achieved an enviable feat by winning a ticket for European educational tours to be undertaken with 49 others from across the state.
Class 12 student R Sathish Kumar earned the rare opportunity from the state for his achievements at state and national-level science contests where his works drew praise. He will be flying to Finland and Sweden as part of the 10-day trip.
The state-funded tour was aimed at exposing students to the advanced science laboratories and infrastructure available in these western countries. They will visit the science centre in Finland, robotics laboratory, shipping harbour, national museum apart from science and technology centre.
Gaining full marks in science in class 10, Sathish has opted for biology for higher school studies and desires to do research after fulfilling his engineering ambitions.
And for Sathish, who was certain he would picked for the trip, visiting counties he has only seen on television is like a dream come true. “I am sure that the tour would be a life-turning experience. This will perhaps give different direction to my future research,” he said.
His mentor and physics teacher P Dhanpal said that Sathish was keen on finding solution to issues faced by people in their day to day life. “His project on idea of drying human excreta collected in toilet using solar power as manure in agriculture gained him recognition at state and national level science exhibition,” Dhanapal said.
Besides this, his project on reducing population of honey bees due to mobile towers and its subsequent effects on agriculture was acclaimed in national children science congress last year, he said. Chief educational officer Karur K Thangavel congratulated Sathish on his being the only student from the district to be part of the educational tour.
