Families throng popular picnic spots in Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts
Picnickers thronged Mukkombu and Grand Anicut along the Cauvery near here on Thursday on the occasion of Kaanum Pongal.
With the Cauvery in full flow, families and youth in groups visited both places. Families came with food hampers and spent time at amusement parks.
The Tourism department hosted a Pongal festival at Mukkombu in the morning with a few cultural programmes.
District Revenue Officer T. Shanthi inaugurated the celebration. Although the crowd was thin at Mukkombu in the morning, it increased gradually as the day progressed.
The Butterfly Park at Melur near Srirangam also drew a good number of visitors on Wednesday and Thursday. The Rockfort in Tiruchi and Puliyancholai near Thuraiyur too witnessed a steady stream of visitors.
The famous Sivaganga Park in Thanjavur teemed with visitors and so did the adjacent Big Temple.
A ‘kolam’contest was organised in Thanjavur under the auspices of Thanjavur District Tourism Promotion Council, INTACH and SVATMA.
