The 172nd annual aradhana of the saint composer, Sri Thyagaraja, began at the saint’s samadhi on the banks of the Cauvery at Thiruvaiyaru near here on Monday.
‘Kalaimamani’ T.V.Gopalakrishnan lit the kuthuvilakku to mark the inauguration of the aradhana, organised by Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha in the presence of G.K. Vasan, former Union Minister and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the sabha, musicians and music aficionados. A. Annadurai, Collector, also participated.
The main event, the rendering of the pacharatna kritis by musicians, would be held on Friday. Saint Thyagaraja attained mukti on the Pushya Bahula Panchami day in 1847 and musicians pay musical homage to the saint composer on that day by singing and playing instruments in unison on that day every year.
Sabha secretaries Aridwaramangalam A.K. Palanivel and Srimushnam V. Raja Rao, spoke. The inauguration was followed by music programmes by musicians.
