TRICHY: The Trichy Corporation has started drawing kolams (patterns using rice powder) to prevent littering by the public which has become a nuisance.
After penalties were levied on people dumping waste in public spots, officials said that littering had activities came down to an extent. However, several vulnerable spots in the market and commercial areas were still witnessing rampant littering.
The civic body has started to draw kolams using rice powder on the frequently littered spots, including Gandhi Market area.
“We employ sanitary workers to draw colourful kolams after clearing the littered spot. People unwilling to disturb the patterns were found keeping away from dumping waste,” said E Parasuraman, a sanitary official with Ariyamangalam zone.
“Instead of being a temporary gimmick, the corporation should take forward such cleanliness initiatives on a long run,” said K Chinnaiyan, a resident of Babu Road.
