Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress today appointed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the party’s general secretary for the Uttar Pradesh (East) region.
She will formally take charge from the first week of next month.
Priyanka’s involvement in politics has so far been largely limited to campaigning in the party’s ‘pocket boroughs’ of Amethi and Raebareli in earlier elections. This is the first time she will play a more active role in the party’s organisational hierarchy.
Commenting on the move, party chief Rahul Gandhi described Priyanka as a capable and hard working young leader.
Welcoming the move, senior party leader Motilal Vohra said Priyanka’s appointment will auger well for the party in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
In a media release today, the Congress also announced other changes in responsibilities within the organisation. KC Venugopal will take over the reins of the party’s general secretary (organisation) from Ashok Gehlot with immediate effect.
In other changes, Jyotiraditya Scindia has been made general secretary for Uttar Pradesh (West), while Ghulam Nabi Azad has been given the responsibility in Haryana.
