Trichy: With the indefinite strike of government employees and teachers entering the third day, over 2,000 employees were detained for sitting on a road blockade near the district collectorate on Thursday.
Launched across the state on Tuesday, the indefinite strike called by the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees (JACTO GEO) is gaining momentum day by day. The crowd registered their protest against the state government for not paying heed to their litany of demands that included revoking of new pension scheme etc. Recommended By Colombia The protesters sat on the road and staged a road blockade throwing traffic out of gear. The appeal by the police to the protesters to disperse failed to elicit any response.
The police arrested 2,100 protestors including 1,200 women and cleared the way for traffic. The arrested staff were lodged in marriage halls and let off in the evening. In Trichy district, the absence of the teachers hit the government schools for the third consecutive day. Going by the data of the district administration, 54.7 % of the teachers in the state-run schools in the district failed to report to duty without any intimation. Out of 14,062 teachers of working strength, only 5,945 teachers turned up to work while 7,687 employees remained absent. The department said that 430 employees availed of their leave with prior permission.
The data showed that the participation of employees of the revenue department, highways, survey, rural development, collegiate education, Hindu religious and charitable endowment was high among other department employees in the protest. The district administration said that out of 32,320 strength of working employees, 22,171 reported to duty today. The protests and arrests also took place in rest of the districts in the central region.
