TRICHY: Bharathidasan University has warned of strict action if research scholars are forced to host a feast on the day of their PhD viva voce examination. The warning was issued by registrar Gopinath Ganapathy through a circular which said scholars should not be financially burdened in any way and the respective research supervisors would be held accountable in coordinating the examination including logistics and accommodation.

“No lunch or dinner should be served within the university campus after the viva voce,” said the circular. The university has also cut the number of participants in the viva voce from the existing 30 to 20 to further reduce the expenses incurred during the viva voce examination. The move has come following complaints from research scholars who were made to spend huge sums by hosting lavish lunch. “The practice of providing lunch after the viva-voce has been abolished in other state universities like Manonmaniam and Periyar,” said vice chancellor P Manisankar.

“We had received complaints on research scholars being forced to host lunch, especially from research scholars who aren’t receiving any fellowship for their PhD,” he said. Since the lunch meet was becoming a lavish event with heavy non-vegetarian food, it was causing financial burden to scholars. “Therefore, we decided to do away with such a practice,” he said.

A majority of research scholars coming to BDU were from a very humble background and the move would certainly benefit them, said a research scholar from BDU. “Hosting lavish lunch has been the order of the day in the university as most of the research supervisors insist on doing so. This is because the external examiner are known to the research supervisor in most cases,” said the research scholar.
