Trichy: The Trichy Corporation has proposed 70 acres of defence land in Mannarpuram on the Trichy-Madurai national highway (NH) as a viable option for establishing the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT).

The corporation has submitted a proposal in this regard to the district administration after finding that the previously proposed site at Kottapattu near the Trichy-Pudukottai NH as unviable to establish a facility like IBT.

For more than two decades, commuters have been demanding the establishment of a spacious IBT to overcome congestion at the Central bus stand. Though several locations were identified including Panchapaur, Pirattiyur, and Ariyamangalam, nothing had materialised so far. Meanwhile, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in October 2017 announced that the IBT would be set up at Kottapattu near Trichy airport.

However, feasibility studies were said to have inferred that the site was unviable for a bus stand project. With all the proposed locations except Panchapur eliminated, the corporation recently submitted a new proposal to the district administration proposing the state government to consider acquiring the defence land near Mannarpuram.

Close to 70 acres of land near Mannarpuram roundabout and K K Nagar on the Trichy-Madurai NH has been identified by the civic body as a suitable place for the IBT facility. “The district administration was approached to consider acquiring the defence land in Mannarpuram for IBT.

Compensatory land has to be identified either in the district or in other parts of the state,” an official source with civic body said. However, the move has not gone well with the residents. “It seems that the state government is intentionally shelving Panchapur site just because the venue was proposed by the previous DMK government,” V B Jeganath, member, Trichy Intra-City Development Endeavours (TIDES) said.

Even as the state government is struggling to obtain 0.66-acre defence land for Trichy Junction RoB, residents said that obtaining 70 acre land from defence ministry would be an uphill task.
