THANJAVUR: More than 20 trains have stops at Papanasam, but the railway station has been lacking several basic amenities such as lighting, proper platforms and coach indicators for years now. Even though the small station’s earnings touch Rs 1 crore per annum, railway authorities have turned a blind eye towards the need for creating amenities, passengers allege.
“More than 700 passengers have been using Papanasam railway station every day. However, the station doesn’t have basic amenities,” Papanasam Train Passengers Association secretary T Saravanan said. “The station was once a low-level platform. However, the entire station got a makeover at the time of gauge conversion. After that the the station has been left unattended,” he added. “More than 20 train services have stoppages at this small station.
The platform is an inconvenience for passengers as almost each and every tile has developed cracks. It is causing injuries to passengers. The entire platform should be renovated,” he said. “The absence of electronic coach indicators is also another inconvenience for passengers.
Although it was installed two years ago, without any reason they were removed from the platform. Women and elders have to walk along the platforms in haste to board coaches,” Saravanan said. 64 2/18/2019 Busy Papanasam station cries for basic amenities .
