A PWD official said that the officials gave the assurance pending clearance from the state government for the opening of the two quarries. The meeting was necessitated by the hunger protest by bullock cart owners and their family members on the campus of the public works department (PWD) river Cauvery division at Subramaniapuram in the city.

The protest was spearheaded by sand bullock cart workers’ association . The protesters were up against the PWD for closing the sand mining quarry at Madhavaperumal kovil across Kollidam river recently leaving bullock cart owners with no quarry for taking sand. The district president of the association, G K Ramar, said that the price of each load of cart would be around Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 .

“With the assurance to open two quarries, we can bring down the price of sand,” he said. He also said that the officials agreed to consider their demand for two more quarries at Murungapettai across Cauvery and Kondaiyapettai across Kollidam after conducting inspections and getting environmental clearance.
