Royals Road spread for about 700 metres from Major Saravanan roundabout till central bus stand is home to several banks, hospitals, government offices and commercial establishments. Though thousands of local people and visitors to hospitals and government offices use the road, the pedestrian slabs along its northern side have been in ruins for at least 3 years now. While the Royals Road park attracts scores of children, parents have been complaining about the unsafe condition of the slabs seen with protruding metal rods. The Times of India had also carried a report titled “In clean city, pavements are not for pedestrians” dated February 13 highlighting the plight of pedestrians using Royals Road and other stretches in the city.

Following the complaints, K Abishekapuram zone of the civic body had taken up repair work on a portion of Royals Road adjacent to the corporation park. Official sources said that the damaged pedestrian slabs on the entire stretch would be renovated at an estimated cost of Rs 10 lakh. As there are also complaints about encroachments in the storm water drain over which the slabs for pedestrians are laid, corporation sources said that the ongoing work would also streamline the blockages in the canal. Owing to the poor shape of the pedestrian platforms, local people as well as staff and visitors to hospitals located on the stretch have been walking on the carriageway risking their lives. “The renovation work taken up on the 70-metre stretch will be completed in a week and the other parts of Royals Road will be renovated within a month,” an official said.
