A new Electronic Interlocking Signalling System has been commissioned at Velliyanai railway station near Karur falling under the Salem Railway Division limits, replacing Panel Interlocking System, which was in use at the station since 1987.
An official said the system would enable automatic route setting for reception and dispatch of trains thereby improving safety and ease of traffic operations. The system has been put in place at a cost of ₹ 1.5 crore. It was more reliable and required less space and less power consumption besides having self diagnostic features.
It would simplify signalling alterations in connection with future yard modification works and easily be integrated with the centralised traffic control in due course of time.
The official said sanction had been accorded for provision of electronic interlocking signalling system at Eriyodu and Palayam railway stations along the Karur – Dindigul broad gauge route besides at Lokur and Doddampatti stations in the Salem – Jolarpet section. The new systems at the four stations were expected to be commissioned in two to three months.
