TRICHY: Though the residents have lauded many of the projects in the city corporation’s budget for the financial year 2019-20, they also have their share of demands which are yet to be fulfilled.
An integrated bus terminus (IBT), a bus stand at Srirangam and foot over bridges (FoB) are among the top demands by residents. In the last 10 budgets, the corporation has been mentioning about establishing an IBT facility in the city.
But the failure in identifying a suitable location makes it a project only on papers. A bus stand at Srirangam, which had been finding a place in the budgets since 2013-14, was given a miss this time too. “Though a suitable land was identified near Yatri Nivas, there is no progress in building a spacious transit facility. Lakhs of pilgrims who visit Srirangam temple every month choke the vehicle movement as buses are parked on the roads,” S Kannan, a resident of Srirangam said. Foot over bridges (FoB) near Chathiram and Melapudur are also missing in the budget. “Even small towns have FoBs, but Trichy lacks skywalks,” N Manivannan, member, Trichy Intra-City Development Endeavours (TIDES) said.
The residents complained that the arterial roads in the city are in bad shape. Though the civic body has spent more than Rs 20 crore for the development of roads last year, they said that Salai Road, Karur Bypass Road, Sasthri Road, and Anna Nagar Link Road have still potholes. Sharing the constraints in identifying a suitable land for the IBT project, the civic body said that soon it will find a solution for thie long-pending demand.
