TRICHY: Hundreds of residents from areas in and around Senthaneerpuram and Sangiliyandapuram in the city on Monday petitioned the divisional railway manager (DRM) of Trichy demanding that a footpath, which cuts across the railway tracks, be reopened so that they can reach Ponmalai without taking a circuitous route.
On February 28, the railway authorities blocked the stretch without any prior information forcing people to take a long detour before arriving at the same destination. In their petition, the residents stated that thousands of residents from Senthaneerpuram, Sangiliandapuram, Valluvar Nagar, Anna Nagar, Pitchai Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, MGR Nagar and hundreds of railway employees have been using the stretch – by crossing railway tracks, for more than 100 years.
People from all these areas have to use the stretch to reach Ponmalai weekly shandy. The residents appealed to the authorities to allow them along the stretch at least for time being and urged that a limited use subway be constructed as a permanent solution.
