TRICHY: As part of the smart cities mission, Trichy Corporation has roped in Salem Steel Plant, a special steel unit of Steel Authority of India Limited, to beautify the city with decorative and utilitarian materials made of steel. Officials from the steel plant will visit the city this week to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to identify suitable spots to install steel benches, dust bins and artistic statues.
Since beautification is one of the crucial components in the smart cities mission, for which Trichy has been selected, the civic body said that they have drafted a plan to install durable as well as aesthetic steel products to improve city’s liveability standards. Salem Steel Plant has been asked to prepare a DPR to arrive at project cost and feasibility. “Officials from the Salem steel plant will be doing field visits in the next few days to identify appropriate spots to propose suitable beautification plans,” corporation commissioner N Ravichandran told.
The cost of the project will be revealed only after the DPR is prepared, official sources added. The beautification project would focus on providing aesthetic steel benches in public parks and localities where people gather besides erecting artistic statues made of steel at crucial junctions and roundabouts. Solar tree, a tree-like artwork comprising equipment to generate electricity, is also on the cards as a part of the beautification drive. “If the model of steel bins appear aesthetic, it can fan behavioural change among the public to use the bins which will be placed in corporation parks,” official sources added.
