Intensifying the drive of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board against single-use plastic bags, Voice Trust distributed cloth bags to the public at the Chathram bus stand after taking the plastic bags in their possession on Monday.
Under the auspices of ‘Message on Wheels’ campaign of the Department of Environment, M. Gunasekar, Assistant Commissioner, Srirangam Zonal Office, joined A. Gregory, Project Director, Voice Trust, and National Green Corp coordinators in distributing cloth bags and informative pamphlets to the public.
The team subsequently covered Woraiyur, Sannidhi Veedhi at Tiruvanaikoil, Periyar Statue area at Srirangam, and the vicinity of the City Corporation’s Zonal Office at Srirangam.
At the District Central Library, the R. Sivakumar, District Library Officer, distributed the pamphlets to the visitors.
The M.R.Palayam Forest Extension Division of the Forest Division, and the offices of Chief Educational Officer and District Educational Officers extended their support for the ‘Message on Wheels’ initiative.
Through roping in participation of National Green Corps and Eco Clubs in educational institutions, the campaign will be extended to all the 64 wards of the City Corporation and also in Manapparai, Musiri and Lalgudi educational districts by the respective environment coordinators, Mr. Gregory said.
Voice Trust was invited by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) earlier this year for the initiative to prepare an action-plan to enforce ban on 14 plastic items.
The ‘Message on Wheels’ campaign was finalised at a recent meeting convened by the District Environment Engineer, TNPCB, Tiruchi, M. Lakshmi, for follow-up actions.
