TRICHY: Indiscriminate dumping of construction and demolition waste continues in various parts of the city as the enforcement from the civic body is amiss. The load carriers unload the building debris mostly on the banks of water bodies and vacant lands adjacent to arterial roads.
The civic body has earmarked a site each in all the four zones of the corporation to dump construction waste, but many are unaware of the facility and dump debris in public spots. “We frequently notice load carriers dumping construction waste on the sides of Aarukan Road heading to Kulumayee Amman temple.
Recently, they dumped building debris on the banks of Uyyakondan canal, which were cleared by volunteers,” Ram Karthikeyan, a resident of New Raja Colony said. As per the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, though the civic body is entitled to collect up to Rs 5,000 as penalty for dumping building debris on public spots or vacant lands, the absence of the same is encouraging load carriers to dump building debris at will.
Water bodies in K Abishekapuram and Ponmalai zones, including the banks of Kudamurutti River and Kanakkankulam tank were the spots where load carriers dump construction waste freequently. Officials with the civic body said that they will take action against the offenders.
