Trichy: Election department officials in Pudukottai have roped in the postal department to create awareness among the people on the need to exercise their franchise.
For this purpose, post cards with messages intended to make people aware of their democratic rights will be sent to their address. People in the voting age, especially from Pudukottai district where voting was registered last time, will be sent a card urging them to ensure they exercised their franchise this time. About 40,000 such post cards have been made by Pudukottai election officials with an awareness message to the people to not skip voting at any cost.
The card also has the voters’ helpline number ‘1950’ apart from the toll free 1800 425 8541. The cards were handed over to postal department officials at a meeting on Friday. The postal department will be making door-to-door delivery of these cards.
“We have identified areas that witnessed less polling across the district. We will ensure that polling per cent goes up in these areas by making more voters exercise their franchise,” said Pudukottai collector P Uma Maheswari. The initiative was adopted from Tuticorin district where a similar exercise was carried out.
Officials from the postal department have been asked to interact with people apart from handing over the postcards to create awareness on voting. Even though there is no separate parliamentary constituency for Pudukottai, all the four assembly segments in the district are part of four adjoining parliamentary constituencies.
