Trichy: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) team has bagged the championship title at the all India public sector volleyball tournament 2018-19 hosted by the Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (Bhel) Trichy. In the closely fought final match played at the Bhel community centre near Thuvakudi on Thursday, ONGC defeated the team representing Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in straight games, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22.
A total of eight teams from Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), Coal India, ONGC, Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), Oil India Limited, ESIC and Bhel were divided into two groups and competed in the tournament. Over 100 players took part in the three-day event that commenced on March 19.
Speaking on the occasion after giving away prizes, K Nagarajan, general manager (civil) Bhel Trichy said that sports teach valuable life lessons. “Professional leagues of various sports being organized in India are playing a crucial role in promoting sports as a culture,” he said. The volleyball teams from LIC and Oil India Limited grabbed third and fourth prizes respectively of the tournament.
