Trichy: Claiming that dissent within the party will not affect its electoral prospects, All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu Sanjay Dutt has said that the party is confident of sweeping the ensuing general elections in the state. He also claimed that the candidates identified for the nine constituencies in the state were selected based on their winnability.
On Monday prior to the filing of nomination papers by party candidate S Thirunavukkarasar for the Trichy Lok Sabha seat, Sanjay Dutt said, “There was no delay in releasing the list of candidates. As it was a pan-India list, names of candidates identified for constituencies across the country were released in a phased manner.” When asked about the protest by former Union minister Sudharshana Nachiappan for not giving him ticket to contest from Sivaganga constituency, Sanjay Dutt said that such instant reactions will in no way harm the Congress’ chances of victory . “In our strongholds, we will work for the victory of DMK and other allies. Likewise, the allies will work for us in their strongholds,” he said.
He added that such reactions were common as the high command could pick only one candidate for a constituency. Sanjay Dutt justified the selection of candidates for the Kanyakumari and Sivaganga seats, H Vasantha Kumar and Karti Chidambaram, saying they were the only candidates who received more than 10% votes polled in the 2014 general election. “Jothimani who has been fielded from Karur Lok Sabha segment is a person who rose from the grassroots level. Only Congress party will select such candidates from a simple background,” he added. On fielding former TNCC president E V K S Elangovan.
