Perambalur: Perambalur district collector and district election officer of Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency refused to accept the nomination of the Makkal Needhi Maiam candidate Senthilkumar on Tuesday citing his late arrival to the election office.
N Senthilkumar, 43, along with three other party workers arrived at the collector office to submit his nomination. District election officer V Shantha declined to admit his nomination and affidavit. Tuesday was the last day for filing nominations. The election officials told Senthilkumar that the time to file the nomination was over and he reported to the office only at 3.20 pm while the deadline was 3 pm.
A dejected Senthilkumar and his men tried to prove that they reached the office by 2.45pm. But, their claim was not entertained by the officers. V Vineshkumar of MNM maintained that their nomination was not accepted despite their arrival before the stipulated time.
“When we reached the office at 2.45 pm, the officials asked us to wait as two other independent candidates were filing their nominations. After they filed their papers, the candidate and three others met the election officer but the nomination was not accepted,” said Vineshkumar adding that they can prove their point through CCTV footage at the collector office. When contacted, Senthilkumar also said that he was completely upset over the development at the last minute.
“Our party men already got the token and waited in queue. I joined them at 2.45 pm with some documents required. When we entered the chamber of the collector, the time crossed 3 pm and they rejected my nomination even though we came earlier. I brought the matter to the party high command and awaiting their instruction. It may be recalled that MNM has recently replaced Arul Prakasam, a Chennai-based man with Senthilkumar to contest from Perambalur constituency.
