Trichy: The federation of farmers’ associations has resolved to adopt various resolutions including urging the government to construct a number of check-dams across the Cauvery, wherever collector wells have been established.
If water is pumped continuously without any sensible schemes to save groundwater table, the district will face severe water scarcity, farmers said. Drinking water is being supplied to 24 districts from the Cauvery in Trichy.
For the purpose, giant electric motors have been used to pump water leading to the district getting dry. So, it is important to construct check dams across the Cauvery at various spots. The check dams would help retain groundwater table considerably, functionaries of farmers said. Another resolution demanded the state and central governments to waive off the entire debts of the farming community before March 30, 2019.
They also urged the state government to announce the entire delta region as a protected agriculture zone. To help the thousands of distressed agriculture labourers in the delta region, the government should announce an assistance of Rs 3000. The federation also adopted a resolution for supporting the AIADMK-led alliance in the forthcoming general as well as by-elections to be held in the 18 assembly constituencies
