TRICHY: Paying heed to repeated demands and complaints from the public as well as city traffic police, state highways department has decided to reduce the size of Anna statue roundabout at Melachinthamani near Chathiram bus stand. The highways department will also widen a portion of the road branching off from the roundabout to connect Chathiram bus stand. The roundabout instead of regulating vehicular movement has been hindering flow of vehicles towards Melachinthamani.
Since the stretch was rarely regulated by the traffic police, congestion was a routine affair. In a preliminary work sanctioned by the state highways to streamline traffic, the highways department will reduce the radius of Anna statue roundabout at Melachinthamani where Chennai trunk road, Karur road, and Melachinthamani road merges.
“The roundabout’s size in Melachinthamani should have been reduced long back. It is a struggle to drive past the roundabout. Glad that officials have understood our plights,” said S Venkatraman, a commuter from Sankaran Pillai street.
The move will widen the junction for vehicles arriving from Srirangam heading to Chathiram bus stand and from old Karur road towards Melachinthamani. A portion of the road branching off from Melachinthamani roundabout will also be widened. State highways department has simultaneously started modifying the median on the stretch. “The renovation work has been taken up after complaints about congestion at the roundabout repeatedly. Ahead of the announcement of the election, we floated a tender and identified a contractor to complete the work,” an official source said.
