TRICHY: The school education department’s order asking teachers engaged in evaluation of board examination answer scripts to work on Saturday (April 6) has not gone well with the teachers’ body. Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Graduate Teachers’ Association said on Thursday that teachers will boycott evaluation process if the order is not rolled back. About 1,200 teachers are engaged in the evaluation of class X board examination papers in each of the two evaluation camps set up in Trichy district.
According to officials from the school education department, the move would speed up the evaluation process keeping in mind the general elections. However, exemption is only given to those teachers who celebrate Ugadi festival that falls on Saturday. V Gopinathan, state vice president of the association, said that all the teachers must be given holiday because all of them must attend election related training on Sunday. “Working for the last seven Saturdays has put teachers under pressure and further scraping of holidays will affect their productivity,” he said.
Gopinathan also said that they have also written to the district education officer against evaluation of English language answer scripts by non-English subject teachers. While teachers from the government and government aided schools are engaged in the evaluation process, non-English subject teachers have been asked to evaluate English language answer scripts. This will affect the result of students, he said. However, a senior official from the school education department clarified saying that results would not be affected as most of the teachers from government aided schools are teaching multiple subjects. “Appointment of English teachers was not made in these schools until recently and teachers were made to take multiple subjects. Evaluation is being made by teachers who are teaching those subjects in the classrooms,” said the official.
