TRICHY: While former and serving state ministers are busy campaigning for their sons fielded in a number of Lok Sabha constituencies across the state, the trend is the other way around in Trichy parliamentary constituency. With only 10 days left for polling, the children of the major candidates in the fray have been lending a helping hand to their parents. At a time when senior political leaders face criticism for patronising ‘dynastic politics’ and fielding their blood relations, the voters were seen generally warming up to the ‘juniors’ of the Lok Sabha candidates here.
Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), which started campaigning much before its rivals, has taken a headstart in the involvement of the candidate’s family in electioneering. Radha Niranjani, daughter of AMMK candidate Sarubala Thondaiman, has been making her presence felt in fieldwork. With Pudukottai and Gandharvakkottai assembly constituencies falling under the Lok Sabha segment here, voters in the two segments often lament that candidates don’t attach much significance to them. Since AMMK’s prime rival, Su Thirunavukkarasar of Congress, hails from Pudukkottai district, AMMK has deputed Radha Niranjani to turn the conditions in two segments in its favour. “We have taken note of the demands of the villagers during the door-to-door campaigns. A lot of women came forward spontaneously to interact with us during the door campaigning. We promised to meet them frequently even after the election,” Radha Niranjani told. The 29-year-old with a postgraduation in hospitality and business management said she would serve as a bridge between the people of Pudukkottai and her mother if the latter was elected.
The Congress camp has also been witnessing the active presence of the candidate’s children — in fact three of them. Sources said that the three sons of Trichy candidate Thirunavukkarasar are immersed in their father’s campaign. “Our candidate’s son S T Ramachandran is spearheading the social media unit while the youngest son Vishnu is accompanying his father during on-field campaigns,” Manikandam Kaliyaperumal, IT wing functionary with the Congress, said. Cadres of both the parties claimed that they felt excited at finding the candidate’s juniors directly involving themselves in campaigns as it gave them a sense of bonding during the field work. Similarly, DMDK sources said that its candidate in Trichy representing the AIADMK-led front, Dr V Elangovan, has also been receiving support from his family including his daughter who campaigned for him in the constituency recently.
