TRICHY: Hurling of allegations and counter-allegations, violence and finally cancellation of permission for campaign were the highlights of an action packed final day of electioneering in Karur constituency on Tuesday. The day also witnessed a clash between cadres of the rival fronts which left at least fifteen people including police personnel injured and Congress candidate Jothimani’s vehicle damaged.
The other low point of the campaign was returning officer and collector T Anbalagan declaring threat to his life and that he was prevented from discharging his duties. The topic of contention was the permission to hold the concluding day’s wrap-up campaign by both AIADMK candidate Thambi Durai and Congress’ Jothimani from Vengamedu in Karur town.
Thambi Durai had sought permission from 4 pm to 6 pm for the campaign, a slot that Congress candidate S Jothimani was allotted. She had received permission to carry out the campaign at the venue after staging a sit-in protest for over 5 hours along with DMK Karurdistrict unit in-charge V Senthil Balaji at the RDO office on Sunday. Her grouse was that election officials had defied norms while giving permission to Thambi Durai to carry out the campaign.
Subsequently, AIADMK members were told to campaign from 12 noon to till 2 pm much to their discomfiture. Transport minister M R Vijayabhaskar had approached the collector on behalf of Thambi Durai on Monday night seeking permission to carry out campaigning from 3 pm – 6 pm.
