TRICHY: Incidences of cash distribution to voters were registered by the election flying squad in Siruganur, Vaiyampatti and Lalgudi areas in Trichy district in the last couple of days.
With election to be held on Thursday, police officials said that they would intensify monitoring as the candidates would be desperate to distribute cash in a short span of time. The significant among the monitoring of cash transit was that the rural police increased the number of flying squads by three times. Instead of having one flying squad each for one of three shifts, police have deployed three teams that will be going around their jurisdiction. A total of 57 flying squads got into work in the run-up to the elections.
Earlier, the teams seized a total of Rs 30,000 and caught two people in one case while the accused in another escaped leaving behind their bikes. On Monday, a flying squad team on patrol found two men indulging in cash distribution to the voters in Pudhur Uthamanur village in Siruganur police limit. The team rounded them up and caught them red-handed with Rs 28,800 cash.
They were handed over to the Siruganur police who later registered a case and arrested them. On April 14, a flying squad team spotted a group of men distributing cash to the voters in Mattaparaipatti village in Vaiyampatti area on the outskirts of Trichy district. On seeing the team, the gang fled the scene leaving behind three two-wheelers and a list of names of voters. A police officer said the list of voters was prepared for cash distribution. In the Vaiyampatti incident, they could not seize any cash from them. A senior police officer said that both the DMK and the AIADMK were involved in the incidents.
One more case was reported in Lalgudi area on Monday night.
