Trichy: Though Trichy remains a most sought after destination for hosting political conferences, regional and national political parties have given the city a miss during the election campaign this time. The G-corner ground, which had hosted massive conferences, did not witness even a single meeting this election.

According to the local people and cadres of political outfits, the campaign mood in Trichy was cold and sleepy. Owing to its geographical significance, political parties have preferred Trichy to mobilise crowd whether there is an election or not. But, the recently concluded election campaign saw parties skip the city while choosing venues for election meetings.

Among the various grounds, G-Corner ground on the Chennai-Trichy NH near Ponmalai was their favourite venue for its vastness and proximity to the national highways. National leaders including Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi addressed huge gatherings during the 2014 elections. But, this year the ground did not host even a single public meeting. “It is surprising that nobody has utilized G-Corner ground this election,” K C Neelamegam, a resident of Ponmalaipatti said. The only public meeting held in the city during the campaign this time was on Thennur Uzhavar Sandhai ground by the DMK, that too only for an hour.

But, residents expressed joy for the absence of political buzz as it saved them from traffic congestions and pollution. Political parties said that the absence of a direct fight between the DMK and the AIADMK in many constituencies might be a reason for the minimal cacophony this election. In many constituencies it is their allies who are battling each other. With the Congress fielding Su Thirunavukkarasar in the constituency, it was expected that Rahul Gandhi will descent in Trichy, but his meeting was shifted to Theni. The other hotspots including Panchapur ground and Mannarpuram ground were also left vacant this election. “We did not get any feel of election campaigning in the past few weeks,” S Prem, a resident of Vayalur Road said. Expensive rent charged for the G-Corner ground was cited as a reason for the poor show.
