As many as 100 people, mostly children developed vomiting and nausea after eating ice candy at a temple festival held near Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district here on Monday. A total of 81 people, including 66 children have been admitted at the Mayiladuthurai government hospital, while 15 children at the Sirkazhi primary health centre and 10 others at the Thiruvenkadu primary health centre, police said.
Hundreds of devotees from various villages like Akkaraipettai, Keechankuppam converged at the Renuka Parameswari Amman temple located at Vanagiri, a fishing hamlet to witness the kumbabishekam scheduled to be held during the morning hours of Monday. Children and women who attended the kumbabishekam consumed ice candy sold by a private ice company from Thiruvenkadu. They had carried ice candy in four vans and sold to the devotees.
